Instagram has been blocked in Turkey. According to the state-affiliated news agency DHA, the decision is based on the Turkish Authority for Information and Communication Technologies and took effect on the second of August. Official reasons or information on the duration of the block have not been disclosed yet. However, the government-friendly newspaper Sabah reported that access was blocked because Instagram deleted posts in which Turkish users expressed their condolences for the slain Hamas politician Ismail Hanija. Turkish Communications Director Fahrettin Altun accused Instagram of censorship on the X platform. Erdogan declared a day of national mourning for Hanija's death on X and emphasized Turkey's close ties to Hamas. Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel, on the other hand, are currently very tense.
