A study by Washington State University shows that working night shifts can have devastating effects on health in just a few days. Researchers found that even short work shifts can disrupt important rhythms for regulating blood sugar, energy metabolism, and inflammation. Disruption of internal rhythms leads to chronic stress and long-term health consequences such as diabetes and obesity. The study on volunteers simulating three days of night or day shifts revealed changes in protein rhythms involved in glucose regulation. Night shift workers experienced almost complete reversal of glucose rhythms and a disruption in the connection between insulin production and sensitivity. While this response may protect against short-term damage from fluctuating glucose levels, it poses risks for longer-term health problems. Early intervention to realign disrupted rhythms could be promising in reducing the risk of diabetes, obesity, and related metabolic disorders.
