The Bundeswehr is the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany and covers both military and civilian areas. It consists of the army, air force, and navy as well as other military and civilian organizational areas. The Bundeswehr originated in 1955 and has continuously evolved since then, especially after the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. The Federal Minister of Defense has command and control over the armed forces, which passes to the Federal Chancellor in case of defense. For foreign missions, the Bundeswehr requires the approval of the German Bundestag. Missions are usually carried out within the framework of mandates from international organizations such as NATO, EU, and UN.
