Since 2014, German hospitals have been billed based on so-called flat rates. Hospitals are paid based on an average value, regardless of the actual effort per case. The problem: The flat rates from health insurance companies and the investments from the states are insufficient to cover the actual costs for children's hospitals. The Catholic Children's Hospital Wilhelmstift in Hamburg has now fallen into such financial distress that urgently needed purchases are to be paid for through a fundraising campaign.
