A fusion of art and innovation is now presented by the BMW Group at the Frieze Los Angeles art fair: the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. The vehicle combines the color-changing technology developed by BMW with the artistic language of South African artist Esther Mahlangu. The designer piece, equipped with electrically animatable film segments, embodies the latest stage of development of the color-changing technology for vehicle surfaces created in cooperation with E Ink. As a contemporary homage, it recalls the BMW Art Car designed by Esther Mahlangu in 1991. On the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, named after Esther Mahlangu's first son, the animatable film segments extend in two stripes over the roof, hood, and rear as well as over the vehicle flanks. Similar to an e-book reader, each E Ink film contains several million microcapsules. The color particles contained in them can be changed in their structure and arrangement by electrical voltage. This allows the colors and patterns typical of Esther Mahlangu's art to be displayed in ever-changing compositions.
