They lurk in nature, suck our blood and transmit diseases. We are talking about ticks, which are spreading more and more again at the beginning of the spring season. Just in time for the start of the tick season 2023, the Robert Koch Institute has now designated two new risk areas in Bavaria. The district of Fürstenfeldbruck and the city district of Munich are now among them. This means that Bavaria is almost completely a risk area for TBE - a disease that can be transmitted by the tiny parasites of ticks. The institute recommends that people who spend time in such an area be vaccinated accordingly. Although this could prevent many cases of TBE, the vaccination rate is low. In 2022, 546 TBE cases were reported to the RKI, 30% more than the previous year. Particular care must be taken at the edges of forests, he said. This is where the little eight-legged creatures are most frequently found.
