Green light for new conscription law in the cabinet: Focus on voluntariness

The new conscription law is coming. Today, the federal cabinet gave the green light. The focus is primarily on one thing: voluntariness. There was no agreement on compulsory military service. Instead, military service should be made more attractive to young people – for example, with more money and integrated drone training. From January 2026, men will receive an online questionnaire on their interest in service and qualifications on their 18th birthday and must answer it. Suitable candidates will then receive an invitation to a medical examination. For women, answering the questionnaire remains voluntary. The opinion in Middle Franconia: mixed.
