With "The Marvels", which premiered on November 10, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has reached a new low at the box office. According to studio estimates, the film only grossed 47 million dollars on its opening weekend. The film is a sequel to "Captain Marvel", which was released in 2019 and grossed 1.13 billion dollars worldwide. David Gross, owner of the consulting firm Franchise Research Entertainment, described the film as "an unprecedented Marvel box office collapse." The Marvels", directed by Nia DaCosta, was the first MCU production directed by a black woman and led by three female protagonists. Reviews for the movie were not particularly good, nor was the general audience reaction. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 62% rating. On top of that, the SAG-AFTRA strikes did "The Marvels" no favors, as the actors were not allowed to promote the film due to the strike rules.
