A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that taking a long daily walk benefits the heart more than multiple short walks. Adults who walk for longer than 10 minutes at a time have a significantly lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases compared to those who only walk shorter distances. The study examined 33,560 adults in the UK aged 40 to 79 who walked less than 8,000 steps per day and categorized them based on their weekly walking duration over an eight-year period. It was found that people who took longer, uninterrupted walks had a lower risk of heart problems than those who walked in short intervals. While many aim for 10,000 steps per day, the study indicates that how these steps are accumulated is crucial, especially for less active individuals. According to the study's lead author, Dr. Borja del Pozo Cruz, the research adds a new perspective to the '10,000 steps a day' concept. Del Pozo Cruz explained, 'Even if you don't reach that number, a few longer walks instead of many short, sporadic steps can make a noticeable difference in heart health and life expectancy.'
