Can too much Matcha cause hair loss?

Matcha has become the wellness drink of choice for many in recent years, as it is not only rich in antioxidants but also releases energy more evenly than coffee. However, when an Instagram video by beauty entrepreneur Michelle Ranavat about Matcha and hair loss went viral, it caused concern among Matcha fans. In the video, Ranavat said she noticed she was losing more hair since she started drinking Matcha several times a day. Dermatologists and nutrition experts clarified that Matcha itself does not directly cause hair loss. The tannins in Matcha can make it difficult for the body to absorb non-heme iron – plant-based iron. If someone already suffers from iron deficiency and drinks a lot of Matcha shortly before or after meals, this problem could worsen. Iron deficiency is also a common cause of thinning hair. Dr. Heather Viola told Vogue that it is best to wait at least an hour between consuming Matcha and eating iron-rich meals. Dr. Viola also recommends not consuming more than two to three grams of Matcha per day, as Matcha is more concentrated than regular tea. She explained that too much Matcha can cause headaches, insomnia, and stomach problems – so it is important to adhere to the recommended daily amount.
