In August 1975, 13,000 hectares of forest and heathland were in flames in Lower Saxony. Six firefighters and one policeman were killed in the largest German forest fire to date. Where it burned then, it's green again today. However, after the dry summers of recent years, the risk of forest fires is increasing again
