No more medical certificate? How doctors recognize when patients are lying

Source: CHIP (Glomex)

Many patients go to doctors to get time off work without actually being sick. A doctor reveals in this video how she identifies the deceivers. Dr. Maria Hummes is a general practitioner from Hamburg, has many years of experience, and knows immediately if someone is lying to get a sick note using a trick. She says that 70 percent of communication is nonverbal. Signs like raised shoulders, a tense neck, and a downward gaze often reveal when someone is lying. The voice also plays a role: Those who lie usually speak in a monotone and "drone" their statements. If she suspects something, Hummes checks the computer system to see if the patient was recently there with similar symptoms. Compassion? Not here! She then advises that one can go to work even when sleep-deprived.
