Why does the anterior cruciate ligament tear?

Source: mediahype (Glomex)

If the knee is twisted strongly when the lower leg is stationary, the anterior cruciate ligament can tear. This can happen especially in sports like soccer or skiing. After twisting, severe pain immediately sets in the knee, it swells and the joint itself becomes unstable. When the anterior cruciate ligament tears, the affected person also often hears a popping sound.
