In August 2021, the world looked to Afghanistan in horror: within a very short time, the state that had been supported by the West for 20 years collapsed. Even before the last U.S. troops withdrew, the Taliban marched into the capital, much earlier than predicted. The regular government fled. Thousands of Afghans who wanted to leave the country flocked to the airport - in panic and fear of death. How could it have come to this?
