DRIVING TOMORROW - Lotus Engineering consultancy going from strength to strength

Lotus Engineering, the consultancy side of the Lotus business, is going from strength to strength under the company’s Vision80 transformation strategy. Key to its rebirth as a force in global automotive engineering has been its ongoing transition to a new home. Announced last year, the Lotus Advanced Technology Centre (LATC) is on the Wellesbourne campus of the University of Warwick. The UK’s Midlands region is a focal point for automotive and engineering innovation, and is the perfect location for Lotus’ high voltage development and testing centre. That makes it the ideal home of the Lotus Engineering consultancy. As part of the Driving Tomorrow global digital conference, Lotus Engineering has released a new architect’s animation what LATC will be like when complete. More than 100 employees will be based there initially, with capacity for another 200 when the facility's development is complete.

In its latest guise, the Civic embodies a new, progressive ‘exhilarating‘ approach to design. Coupled with Honda’s ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle, this joint approach has shaped all aspects of the Civic’s design and development. The all-new Civic features a sleek and sporty silhouette, which has been achieved through lowering the bonnet line 25mm over the previous generation, whilst the glass area has been increased to create a light and airy interior. The lower feature line enhances the assured stature of the vehicle, as well as giving improved visibility from the rear seats. In comparison to the previous generation Civic, the base of the A-pillar has been positioned further back to align with the centre of the front wheels, this gives the car a more balanced proportion in profile as well as a wider, more assured stance from all angles. The highest point of the roofline has been placed further forward than the previous Civic, with a gentle slope to the tailgate creating a sleek, fast-back style look.

When developing the new Mirai, Toyota optimized every aspect of the vehicle so that it appeals to customers emotionally - in terms of power delivery and performance as well as the way the car drives and looks. The declared goal was to increase the range compared to the first generation to a level that exceeds most purely battery-electric cars. To achieve this, the engine output and the capacity of the hydrogen tanks increased, as did aerodynamic efficiency. The result: a 30 percent larger radius of action that now reaches a good 650 kilometers. This means that the Mirai is now finally moving up into the long-haul vehicle class. Toyota has devoted itself equally intensively to the room layout. The modular GA-L platform, which serves as the basis for the new Mirai, enables considerably more effective packaging. In favor of a more balanced arrangement of the new FCEV drive train, the fuel cell unit has now moved under the hood. In this way, it clears the way for a larger interior space that can now accommodate five passengers.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the 1981 rally season, the only season that Walter Röhrl drove for Porsche, the Porsche Heritage and Museum department surprised the two-time World Champion with the newly restored 924 Carrera GTS from back then.
