The GR Yaris is Toyota's first production model with a roof, made of woven carbon fiber material. Compared to a conventional steel component, this C-SMC (Carbon Sheet Moulding Compound) material saves 3.5 kg at a point that is particularly crucial for the car's center of gravity. Toyota manufactures the hood, tailgate and doors from aluminum, resulting in a further weight reduction of 24 kg. In total, the proportion of aluminum in the body of the GR Yaris reaches around ten kilograms. As a result, it weighs 38 kg less than that of the corresponding Yaris predecessor model. High-strength and ultra-high-strength steels are used at particularly sensitive points of the vehicle. On the one hand, they guarantee the unchanged high crash safety of the three-door model, while on the other hand they allow the use of thinner and therefore lighter metal in other segments.

The New Range Rover Sport has made its global premiere with a dramatic world-first climb up a flooded dam spillway in Iceland. The epic ascent saw New Range Rover Sport resist the surging torrent of water flowing down the ramp of the Karahnjukar Dam – the biggest of its kind in the world – at a rate of 750 tonnes per minute. A loss of traction risked plunging down the perilous 90m drop at the base of the spillway to the valley floor below. The successful spillway ascent was screened for the first time at an exclusive launch event at Jaguar Land Rover’s Advanced Product Creation Centre at Gaydon, UK. Official James Bond stunt driver Jessica Hawkins was behind the wheel as the New Range Rover Sport demonstrated its grip, traction, performance and composure, completing the latest in a series of challenges for Land Rover’s luxury performance SUV. Previous feats include a record-setting hill-climb at Pikes Peak, a first recorded crossing of the ‘Empty Quarter’ desert in the Arabian Peninsula and a first ascent of the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate in China, in 2018.

Underpinning the all-new Nissan Qashqai is the new Alliance CMF-C platform, which has allowed Nissan’s product-planners, designers and engineers to create a vehicle which succeeds in reconciling the challenging customer demands in terms of design, spaciousness, dynamics and carbon footprint. The CMF-C platform is a completely new architecture, designed and developed to ensure the vehicles it carries are competitive, offering the driving and ownership experience that customers will need in a time of dramatic progress in the automotive industry. In terms of driving dynamics, one of the most significant factors in the dynamic performance is the overall increase of stiffness in the new Qashqai’s body in white – with a 48% improvement compared to the outgoing model. With a more rigid basis, Nissan’s engineers have been able to more precisely tune the suspension spring and damper rates, knowing they are reacting to the changes in surfaces – not the movements of the platform. This increases precision, response and reduces vibrations. Despites its overall increase in stiffness, the bodyshell is over 60kg lighter which contributes to the new Qashqai’s overall efficiency, while also reducing inertia when driving, so drivers will feel the improvement in agility. There are two rear suspension configurations, with a torsion beam being the configuration for two-wheel drive Qashqai on 19-inch wheels or below. The torsion beam has been upgraded from the outgoing Qashqai, with a new upper body insulator which increases local body stiffness and reduces the transmission of vibrations to the passenger compartment. And the addition of an uprated bump stop, which helps to infuse the rear suspension with a more supple motion and protection from shocks. To maximise the effectiveness of the dampers, their orientation has been changed to a more vertical position which reduces friction and therefore optimises their performance, ensuring better bump absorption and a smoother ride, as well as providing better roll control.

With the fully digital Pure Panel, the new model offers the driver a completely different cockpit experience. The Opel SUV flagship also features additional technologies and assistance systems that until now customers only find in higher class vehicles. Especially the adaptive IntelliLux LED® Pixel Light with a total of 168 LED elements. The technology from Opel’s flagship limousine, the Insignia, is making its debut in the German brand’s top SUV and sets new standards in the Grandland’s market sector. The same goes for Night Vision, which is celebrating its premiere at Opel. The system detects pedestrians and animals in darkness at a distance of up to 100 metres and warns the driver. The semi-adaptive Highway Integration Assist keeps the Grandland in the middle of its lane and maintains the distance to the vehicle in front. Produced in Germany, the new Grandland also features the Opel Vizor, the brand’s new face.
